Taketomi -On- 御獄

There are sacred places in Okinawa. They are called “On” in Taketomi. Taketomi is a small island, but it has 15 Ons.
Taketomi doesn’t have mountains, rivers and fertile land. Typhoons often hit Taketomi. Our guide, Matchan said “ We’ve prayed to god for help.”
This is Fuina-on.

沖縄には神聖な場所、御獄があります。竹富島では御獄を「オン」と呼び、小さな島に15か所もあります。竹富島は土地が肥えておらず、山も川もなく、台風の災害も多かったので、「人の力ではどうしようもないことが多かったので、神頼みするしかなかったんだよ。」と、まっちゃんおばちゃんは言ってました。祭り事の原点は、そこなんでしょうね。
映画“ニライカナイからの手紙”でも、おじいは白い装束の女性（神司）と一緒に御獄で祈ってました。
国仲御獄。


Sajo-on. I passed under the gate, went on the path surrounded by trees.
仲筋御獄。鳥居をくぐり、緑に囲まれた道を進みと、、、

I reached a sacred place among trees and bush. It was only concrete building with walls and a roof. There was no statue and decorations in it, but people believe gods stay there.
奥に木々に守られた、神聖な場所があります。
そこは、何もないただのブロックの壁で囲まれた空間でしたが、偶像など置かずとも、神様はそこにおられると信じられています。


Konto-on. I saw a bird, Zuguromizogoi.
幸本御獄。ここでは、ズグロミゾゴイに出会いました。この森が、小動物を育んでいるのですね。
