Amami -Oshima Kaikyo

We went up a hill by his car. The view from Kochiyama-tenbodai. I could see Oshima Kaikyo (Strait) and Kakeroma-jima. He said that strong sunshine in summer made the color of the sea more beautiful blue.

I took photos from the right to the left. The first one.

We moved to Yuidake tenbodai. The coastline was complicated, there were many bays.

The color of the sea, sandy beach and trees was so nice.

I could see the Pacific Ocean that I saw at Honohoshi beach.

Amami -Ydori beach-

Yadori beach was opposite to Honohoshi beach, the entrance of Oshima Strait. It was sandy beach, usually calm.

The water was clear, looked like glass.
The owner who dived more than 20 days a month said “ The water is so beautiful. I really want to dive on such beautiful day!” But he spent his time for me. I appreciated his kindness.

The green seaweed was Aosa. “We’ll pick it soon and eat it.”

Amami -Honohoshi beach-

The second day of this trip was a beautiful day. I had planed to visit around Koniya. I asked the owner of the accommodation about transportation such as bus, taxi and rental motorcycle. If I could drive a car, rental car was most convenient to visit many places, but unfortunately I couldn’t. After he considered, he said “Do you want to rent me? I can take you to these places by car. You pay for the fuel.”
At first, he took me to Honohoshi beach.
The sea was the Pacific Ocean, usually strong winds and high waves. But this day was very calm.

The wave came. The sound of the wave was common, not special.

The wave was leaving. !!! The sound of stones rolling was special, comfortable. The moment I heard the sound, Honohoshi beach became one of my favorite places.

All stones in this beach were round because of the strong waves. He said “ We used to use these stones instead of hot-water bottle or ice pillow.”

This hole of the big rock might be formed by the strong wave, too. “ We take a rest in it in summer. Here is very cool.”

Gobies were holding on the rock.

There were various plants. It was a kind of chrysanthemum.

Adan. Its fruit looked like pineapple. “ We used to eat its fruits.” “ We used to make pinwheels with its leaves when I was a child.”

He said “ We used to make our clothes with its bark. The clothes were comfortable in summer, kept us cool.”

Amami -Yagi jiru-

I took a bus, headed to Koniya. It took about two and a half hours. There were many new tunnels. Koniya had been isolated area until the tunnels built in 1980’s.
The owner of the accommodation (Minshuku-Fuji) I had a reservation picked me up at a bus stop in Koniya. He took me to a hill to see islands and sea.

The hill on the right side of this photo was Kakeroma-jima, the hill on the left side was a peninsula. He said “The sun rises from the sea between them.”

I couldn’t see the sunset because of clouds, but around there turned into red slightly. It was so nice.

The owner was a diver. He used to use it for diving.
I was only guest. They served great meal.
They asked me “Would you like to try to eat Yagi-jiru?” I thought it was something like clam soup, but it was wrong. They said “ Wild boars and goats live in the mountain. We eat them.” Yagi-jiru was goat meat in miso soup. Amami people like Yagi-jiru, so they made phone calls to their family and neighbors “We cooked Yagi-jiru today. Do you want some?” It had a characteristic smell like sheep meat, but I liked it.

Amami Oshima - Arrival-

I heard of Amami Oshima last September in Hokkaido. A traveler said to me “ I’ve been to Amami Oshima. It was wonderful! Not only the sea, but also the forest.” I met a traveler from Kagoshima last October in Yakushima. She said to me “Kagoshima has lots of Islands. Each of them is attractive.” I couldn’t wait to visit Amami Oshima.

I flew to Amami Oshima on January 14th.
Amami Oshima had lots of woods!

Just before landing. The color of the sea was wonderful!

The picture of Amami rabbit, purple jay and habu welcomed me at the entrance of Amami airport.
I took a bus, headed to the north of the island, Koniya.

Kohama-jima 4 集落

I left the seashore, walked among fields, headed to the village.

Kohagura-so. TV drama “Churasan” was shot here.

Seaser of Kohagura-so.

A straight road which was called Sugar Road.

There were fields of sugarcane on the both sides of Sugar Road.

This was the wonderful gift from Kohama-jima on the last moment of the trip.
The color of the sea reminded me of the textile fabrics of Yaeyama, Minsa-ori.

Kohama-jima 3 海

I noticed “Akaya-zaki” on my map. I might go to the seashore!

I could go to the seashore. It was the time of low tide.
Children and adults were enjoying their time.

It was the shallow beach. I’d like to spend more time here on the next time.
I noticed the sound that something was falling. Shells?
Hermit crabs! They were so cute.

Kohama-jima 2

I walked down Ufudaki. I walked among fields and pasture.
TV drama “Churasan” was shot in this island. There was “Churasan look-out” on the hill behind this pasture.

Bulls and cows were eating grass.

Churasan look-out. The binoculars were out of order.

There was “Churasan-no-ki” near the hill. But I hadn’t seen the drama, so I couldn’t find the tree.
I could see Iriomote-jima, about 2 km away.

I could see Ishigaki-jima.
I met people who I had met at Ufudaki. They were walking around the island as I was.

Kohama-jima

I went back to Ishigaki-jima from Taketomi-jima. I stayed at Yashima-ryokan YH. The owner was a woman in her 80’s. She said “Do you want to put on kimono of Okinawa? You can choose one of them.” and showed me her kimonos. I put on yellow one.
On the last day of this trip, I had planed to visit around Ishigaki-jima by rental motorcycle. But I changed my mind in the morning. “I’m going to visit Kohama-jima!”
It took 25 minutes by boat from Ishigaki-jima.
I started walking from Kohama-pier, headed to Ufudaki.

I walked to the top of the hill, Ufudaki.

I climbed up this steep slope. Sometimes butterflies welcomed and encouraged me.

Finally I reached the top of the hill! Nice view!!
I could see Ishigaki-jima over there. The small island between Kohama-jima and Ishigaki-jima was Kayama-jima.

I enjoyed the splendid view for a while. Soon after, about ten people with a guide walked up to the place. They looked tired, but the moment they looked down the scenery, their faces turned into full of smile.
