Okamoto -Ume

February 22, it was a sunny day. I visited Okamoto Park to see Ume, plum blossoms.
Okamoto has been famous for Ume groves since Edo period. But they were damaged by flood and landslide in 1938, World War Ⅱ, and developed residential area. In 1982, this park was opened.
Okamoto Park was not so large, but there were many kind of Ume. It was filled with the fragrance of Ume.

Amami - Ohama

I wanted to see tropical fish and coral at aquarium. I get off the bus at Ohama-iriguchi, headed to Ohamakaigan-Koen. I walked down the steep slope for fifteen minutes.

At first, I had a lunch at a restaurant. While I was having lunch, I was hearing the sound of waves and looking the sea. I had a pleasant time.

Onihitode, these starfish eat coral. Increased number of Onihitode damaged coral reef in Amami and Okinawa.

I visited there to see them.

Ohama beach. I saw a whale jumping on the day before.

I spent the last night at Tatsuya-Ryokan. I talked to the owner and other guests, I had a great time.
On the last day of this trip, it was still raining. I decided that I would visit Amami Park and catch early flight.
I met a bus driver at the bus terminal in the morning, he said “Good morning” and smiled at me. He was familiar to me... I remembered! He was the driver who took me from Koniya to Mangrove Park three days before.
I had many opportunities to talk to local people in this trip. They were friendly. Each of them is precious memory for me.

Amami - Yamatoson 大和村

On the following day, I had planed to go around by rental motorbike. But it was raining, so I visited Yamatoson by bus.
It took about 40 minutes from Naze to Yamatoson. The bus ran along the coast. I got off at Yamatoson Yakubamae, walked around the village. These was Gunso, a group of traditional storehouses for crops.

Amami Wildlife Center. It was close to Gunso, surrounded by a park. Now I noticed that the white roof looked like Gunso.

Amami Wildlife Center introduced about Amami islands: wildlife especially endanger species, village life in the nature.
This is a photo of Rurikakesu (Purple Jay). They live in only Amami. There were two model eggs of Rurikakesu which the staff made.

This green pigeon had a problem with its wing, so it was protected.

I left Amami Wildlife Center, I walked along the coast. The color of the sea was blue. If it had been a sunny day, I could’ve seen more beautiful scenery. I wanted to walk for about two hours. But thirty minutes later, the rain started falling. I finished walking at a bus stop, waited for a bus.
This is a Dohyo, sumo wrestling ring. The day before, I saw a Dohyo in a kindergarten. Sumo must be popular for Amami people.

Amami - Mangrove

We had a lunch at Naze, headed to the Mangrove forest to canoe. There were 4 people on the tour. All people except me tried canoeing for the first time. But after our guide instructed, all of us enjoyed canoeing among mangroves in the river.

Amami - Kinsakubaru

I joined a walking and canoeing tour on January 16th. It was a beautiful day. We went to Kinsakubaru forest in the morning.
There were many Hikagehego, big ferns.

The movie, Godzilla, was shot around here.

We walked with our guide on the path for about one hour.

We left Kinsakubaru. Our guide stopped the car on a cliff, we looked at the beautiful sea.
One of us said “ What is the spray?” Our guide was surprised and told us “A whale is jumping. I’ve never seen them such close to the beach.” The whale jumped several times, then disappeared.

Amami -Mangrove Park

I headed to Naze by bus. There were only two passengers. The driver told me about Amami.
Koniya was surrounded by mountains and sea. Then I started to see fields of Tankan, which was a kind of orange. Local people said Tankans were so sweet, they were looking forward to February 5th, the first day in this year Tankan would be sold.

I had a time to get off and walk at Mangrove Park. When I get off the bus, I met three 8-10-year-old children. They were friendly. They told me “I saw Rurikakesu (Purple Jay) today!” “ Eels live in the near river.” They gave me a pinecone.
It looked like a baobab.

The view of Mangrove forest from a hill. I came back here on the following day.

I took a bus, headed to Naze. I stayed at Tatsuya Ryokan, Lonely Planet strongly recommended. It cost 3000 yen for a night, including light breakfast and cozy Japanese style room.
This was Narimochi. Local people made it around January 14th, put colorful rice cake on branch for wish of rich harvest and keep family members health.
