Yakushima -Jomon sugi- 縄文杉ツアー2

We had a lunch, went back to Jomon-sugi. We looked at Jomon-sugi again, then started walking. It was still raining slightly.
In Yakushima, typhoons often approach. The strong winds force to fell down tall trees (taller than 25m). That’s why there were lots of thick trees, but no tall trees in the forest of Yakushima.

縄文杉の近くの休憩所で昼食。再び縄文杉に戻り、思う存分縄文杉を見て感じて、お別れをした。雨は小降りになったが、霧はたちこめて“縄文の森”雰囲気いっぱい。
屋久島では、台風がよく通過するため、木は25mくらい成長すると、折れたり倒れたりしてしまうらしい。だから、幹の太い木はたくさんあるけど、背の高い木はないらしい。また、折れたり倒れた木に種が落ちて、そこから新たな木が成長することも多い。

仲が良い？　何十年か何百年後、それぞれの木が成長すると締め付けられる。どちらの木が生き残るのでしょう。自然は厳しいです。

We went back to the track. There were many plants and trees along the track. We met deer, heard bird’s songs. We had to watch our steps and had to pay attention all around us for fun.
トロッコ道に戻った。「トロッコ道が長くて、、、」という話を屋久島を訪れる前に何人にも聞いたけど、線路ばかり見て歩いてると、確かにうんざりしてくるかもしれない。でも、線路沿いにはいろいろな植物や木が出迎えてくれる。川には巨大な岩がごろごろ。時にはシカにも会えるし。アオゲラやカケスなどいろいろな鳥も鳴いていた。足元に気を配りながらも、きょろきょろ歩く。


I noticed a strange hill. Our guide said it was Nakajimagongen-dake. There were many unique shaped hills in Yakushima.
We arrived at the parking lot around 4 pm.
もうすぐ到着という頃、不思議な山が一瞬見えた。中島権現岳というらしい。巨大な岩を積み重ねたような。屋久島にはこんな変わった形の岩がある山が多い。
16時頃、登山口に到着。10時間くらい歩いた。


Our guide took us to Onoma-onsen on our way to Yakushima YH. The hot spring was so nice.
Mochomu-dake was close to the onsen. There was a hiking trail to Mochomu-dake , I’d like to climb up there in the future.
We went back to YakushimaYH, had a great dinner.

帰りに尾之間温泉に寄った。とてもきもちいい！
温泉前から見えたモッチョム岳。千尋滝展望台から登山道があるので、次回屋久島を訪れたら、ぜひ登ってみたい。
屋久島YHへ戻ると、日替わりお刺身付きのおいしい夕食が待っていた。

Yakushima -Jomon sugi- 縄文杉ツアー1

October 23rd. I joined Jomonsugi day tour from Yakushima YH. I woke up just after 3 am. There were 4 people and a guide in the tour. We gathered 4:20 am, the guide took us to Arakawa-tozanguchi by his car. When we arrived, it was still dark outside. We had a breakfast in his car, then prepared for walking.
We started waking at 5:40. I have a problem with my eyes, I couldn’t see anything in dark. But one of members lit up my way with a flashlight, so I could walk. Thank you, Kiyo!
We walked on the track. The sun was getting rising, birds began singing.

10月23日。屋久島YHの縄文杉トレッキングツアーに参加するため、午前３時過ぎに起床。4時20分、受付前に集合。メンバーは、前日にこのYHで出会ったばかりの男女２名ずつとガイドの５人。ガイドの車で荒川登山口へ。あたりはまだ真っ暗。車内で朝食のお弁当を食べ、歩く準備を始める。
5時40分、まだ暗い。。。暗闇に順応するのが遅い私にとって、最初から最大の難関。。。と、他のメンバーの懐中電灯の明かりに助けられて、難関と突破した。Kiyo、ホントにありがとう！ トロッコ道をてくてく歩く。橋からは下が見えるので、どきどき。徐々にあたりが明るくなって、朝がやってきた。


There was a village here until 1960’s. When they stopped cutting down trees to preserve the forest, they moved out of the forest.
昭和40年代までこの辺りに村（小杉谷集落）があった。屋久杉伐採の中止に伴い、村民は移住していった。ここで最初の休憩。


We walked on the track for about two and half hours. Then we entered “Ookabu-hodo” (big stumps path). Big trees welcomed us.
トロッコ道を約２時間半歩くと、大株歩道の入り口。ここからは登山道。急な登りもあるが、ところどころ歩きやすいように木道や階段が整備されている。とても滑りやすいので、常に足元注意。大きな木達が出迎えてくれる。


How big it is! Wilson-kabu (Wilson stump). It was 13m around the stump.
わぁ〜大きな切り株。ウィルソン株。周囲13mとか。


I looked up from inside the stump.
ウィルソン株の中から見上げる。ハート形に見える場所がある。


There were a stream and a bird’s nest in the stump.
ウィルソン株の中を、水の流れが横切っている。鳥の巣もあった。
写真を撮っていると、後続のグループが到着。みるみる間に辺りは人でにぎわっていた。


It started raining hard. It was misty around us, it seemed like we stepped into the mysterious world.
ぽつぽつ降っていた雨は、本格的になってきた。森は白んできて、いよいよ縄文杉の森にやってきたんだ〜と実感する。



Jomon-sugi. It was said 2100~7200 years old. I felt this cedar was special one for the forest.
縄文杉。他の木とは、何か違う。この森の長老という風格が感じられる。雨や霧が、神秘的な雰囲気をさらに深める。

Yakushima -Shiratani unsuikyo- 白谷雲水峽 2

There were so many mosses. We were walking and chatting in the forest of Shiratani-unsuikyo.
白谷雲水峡をずんずん歩いて行く。辺りは苔の世界。普段、一人で歩くことが多いので、４人でわあわあ言いながら歩くのが楽しい！３人娘さん、ありがとうございました。



Nidai kuguri sugi (two generations tunnel cedar). We could walk under the roots. 3 people I walked with had to catch a ferry to Kagoshima, so they walked down the forest. I walked up to Mononokehime-no-Mori alone.
二代くぐり杉。
最初の木が倒れた後、残った切り株に種が落ち、根付いて二代目の木が生長していました。屋久島の森では、よく見かけます。
３人娘はトッピー（フェリ−）で鹿児島へ帰るため、ここを過ぎたあたりで下山。私はもののけ姫の森を目指した。


Nanahon sugi (seven trunks cedar). Mononokehime-no-Mori was soon.
七本杉。ここを過ぎると、もののけ姫の森はもうすぐ。


Mononokehime-no-mori (mononoke princess’s forest).
あらら〜。。。“もののけ姫の森”の標識がある。ここでは数年前から苔が減少しているとか。





Ikoi-no-Ooiwa (big rocks). The walking route was on the rocks.
I left Shiratani unsuikyo. I went back to Miyanoura Portside YH to get my backpack, headed to Yakushima YH by bus. Yakushima was bigger than I had thought. It took more than one hour between them.

もののけ姫の森を過ぎたあたりで引き返し、下山する。ここは、“憩いの大岩”。屋久島には大きな岩が多い。
バスに乗り、宮之浦ポートサイドYHで荷物を受け取って、バスで屋久島YHへ向かった。屋久島は思っていたより大きく、約３分の１周だけど１時間ちょっとかかった。

Yakushima -Shiratani unsuikyo- 白谷雲水峽 1

October 22nd, it was a beautiful day. I went to Shiratani unsuikyo with 3 people who I met at Miyanoura Portside YH. Shiratani unsuikyo was about 800m above sea level. We saw monkeys and deer from our rental car.

屋久島２日目の10月22日。朝からいい天気。YHで知り合った、鹿児島から来た３人娘と一緒にレンタカーで白谷雲水峡へ。白谷雲水峡は標高約800m。みるみる間に海が遠のいて行った。車道脇には、ヤクザルやヤクシカが時々お目見え。


There was a stream beside the entrance of Shiratani unsuikyo. We started walking.
白谷雲水峡の入り口の横の川。いよいよ屋久島の森！


The roots looked like an octopus.
たこの足ような木の根っこ。


This was a big cedar, Yayoi-sugi. Many plants lived on the tree.
最初の大きな木。弥生杉。


There were some courses for walking in Shiratani-unsuikyo. This path was on “1 hour course”. It was paved with stones or wood, it was easy to walk.
白谷雲水峡には１時間コースや３時間コースがあり、１時間コースは石畳や木道で整備されてて、歩きやすい。


This trail was on “3 hour course”.
3時間コースに入ると、登山道のようになる。


It looked like a dwarf.
この森の住人（？）。60cmくらいの木の根っこに植物が根付いて、こびとのように見えた。

Sanbonashi-sugi (three legs cedar). It looked like it was walking.
三本足杉。木が歩いているように見える。


Its legs were bigger than us.

Yakushima -the sea- 海

Yakushima has not only the great forests, but also the great sea.
I made a booking of scuba diving for beginners on the day before. When I arrived at Miyanoura Portside YH, I started to prepare for it.
A guide picked me up at YH at 1pm, took me to the beach. She explained what I have to do and what I shouldn’t do in the sea. What I have to do were only breathing oxygen and watching fish. I didn’t need to move my arms and legs. The guide pushed and pulled me, took me to the bottom of the sea. I watched tropical fish, sea anemones, sea slugs, sea urchins and so on. It was a great 30 minutes experience.

屋久島は森だけでなく、海でも遊べる。
前日に“体験ダイビング”を予約したので、YHに着くとすぐ準備をする。参加者は私ひとり。インストラクターは女性で、YHまで迎えにきてくれた。
海岸でウエットスーツに着替えて、説明を受けた後、海へ。海の中で私がすることは、口呼吸をすることと耳抜きをすること、おさかなを見ることだけ。インストラクターが私を押して誘導してくれる。
初の海中遊泳。お魚やウミウシなど、カラフルな生き物を間近で見れる。30分があっと言う間だった。


She took me to Ooura onsen. It was a small and old hot spa. It was nice.
大浦温泉。海中遊泳のあと、この海のそばの小さな温泉に連れて行ってもらった。

Miyanoura Portside YH is beside the sea. I could hear the sound of wave.
I enjoyed talking with travelers at the YH.
宮之浦ポートサイドYHの裏は海。
旅人達と、楽しく話をしていると、もう消灯時間。明日からは、森へ。

Yakushima -arrival- 屋久島到着

I just came back from Yakushima in Kagoshima. I had wanted to go there for a long time. Last year, when I was on a hiking tour in Iriomotejima, our guide said “I went to Yakushima in this summer. There were great trees in the forest. The moss was so nice. I was really impressed! I’m sure I’ll visit there again!” At the time I decided to visit Yakushima in the near future.
I got 4 days off in October, I went to Yakushima.
旅の目的地を見つける時、人からのおすすめを参考にすることが多い。私の場合、ほとんどがそう。
昨年12月、西表島でトレッキングツアーに参加した時、ガイドが「今年屋久島に行ったのですが、とっても良かった！またぜひ行きたい」と言っていた。屋久島は遠くてなかなか行けないとあきらめかけていたけど、西表島に住む人でも気に入るなんて、よほど素敵な場所なんだと、とっても行きたくなった。計画を立てると３連休でも、縄文杉に会いにいける。。。行こう！幸運なことに４連休となり、10月21日〜24日屋久島を旅した。


I left Kobe Airport in the morning on the 21st of October. I noticed this scenery outside of the airplane. At first I thought it was the wave of the sea. It was absolutely not. They were mountains!
10月21日朝早く、神戸空港を出発。機内でうとうとしていた時、目に入ったのが、この風景。初めは海の波かと思った。実は山並み。きれいで、見入ってしまった。


I changed planes at Kagoshima Airport. It was beautiful day.
約50分で鹿児島空港に到着。早い昼食をとり、屋久島へ向かう。雲がほとんどない、いい天気。


I arrived at Yakushima. There were clouds on the mountains. Yakushima is said, the island where it has 35 rainy days a month.
I headed to Miyanoura Portside YH by bus.
屋久島空港に到着。屋久島の山々には雲がかかっていた。さすが月に35日雨が降ると言われる島。
バスで宮之浦ポートサイドYHへ向かう。

Mitarai-keikoku in 2005 みたらい渓谷

Mitarai-keikoku, it’s surrounded by mountains in Nara. I went there with Nao to see the autumn colors and stayed at Dorokawa onsen two years ago. We couldn’t believe that there was such an amazing place in Kansai.
I came back here last year. I stayed at Tenkawa YH on the 12th of November. I started walking from the YH in the following morning. I walked along a river. There were steep slopes from the bridges. It was a pleasant hiking along a stream. The pathway sometimes led in the forest, went to Dorokawa-onsen.

関西の紅葉も負けてない。おととし、なおが見つけてくれた紅葉スポット、みたらい渓谷。なおと洞川温泉に泊まって、お散歩した。日帰りでも来れる場所にこんないいところがあるなんて、知らなかったね〜。来て良かったね。と何度も話した。
とっても気に入ったので、去年もまた訪れた。11月13日（日）。
奈良県の山に囲まれた村にある天川YHに泊まり、朝出発。川沿いにてくてくお散歩。吊り橋あたりが、一番の見どころ。ここからは上り坂で渓流を見ながらのお散歩。途中、林の中を歩きながら洞川温泉まで歩いた。
