Mývatn ミーヴァトン

Mývatn means “midge lake”. Lots of midges annoy tourists in summer. Mývatn was formed by flowed lava dam. Those mounds look like volcanic craters are pseudocraters. They were formed by gas explosions when the lava flowed into the lake. Marimo balls (green algae) grow in two lakes in the world, Mývatn and Akanko in Japan.
The road and field were covered with snow and ice on the day we arrived. But on the following day, the temperature went up to 10℃.

ミーヴァトンは溶岩が川をせき止めてできた湖。名前は「蚊の湖」という意味で、夏は蚊やハエが多いそうだけど、秋は蚊もハエもいなくて快適。火口のように見えるのは、プセウドと呼ばれるもので、流れてきた溶岩で沸騰した湖の水が爆発してできたものらしい。マリモができるのは、この湖と日本の阿寒湖の世界で二カ所とか。
到着した日は、雪や氷が道を覆っていたけど、次の日には気温10℃近くまで上がって、緑の草が現れた。


The reflection was amazing. I noticed the beautiful view when I was taking breakfast in the hotel. I jumped out.

湖面が鏡のよう。朝食時、この景色が見えて食事もそこそこに外へ飛び出した。


We walked on the field around the pseudocraters. We had to be careful not to step on sheep’s droppings…

ホテル前のプセウド群をお散歩。羊のふんを踏まないようにするのが大変。
