Heimaey -lava field- 噴火のあと

At 2am on the 23rd of January in 1973, a volcanic eruption began unexpectedly. I saw “Volcanic film show” a film about Vestmannaeyjar (55 minutes), the fire was blowing up from the rift. All islanders evacuated to the mainland immediately, there was no fatality. The eruption made a new mountain (Eldfell), expanded the island. The volcanic ash was massive amount, it took two years to dig up the town.

1973年1月23日午前2時、突然大きな噴火が起こった。Volcanic film showというその時の記録を含めた映画(55分間）を見に行ったが、島に割れ目ができて火が吹き出ていた。全島民避難がすぐ始まり、死者はいなかったとか。その噴火で、島の面積は広がり、新しい山(Eldfell)が現れた。火山灰は大量で、町を掘り出すのに２年かかったとか。


There were traces at many places. Some places were preserved.
町にはその時のなごりがあり、一部はそのまま保存してあった。

I walked on the road in the middle of vast lava field, headed to the east coast to see the edge of the lava flows.
Lots of flowers were blooming on the lava field.
町から溶岩台地の道を歩いて、東側の海岸へ向かう。
溶岩台地にも花がたくさん咲いていた。

Heimaey お散歩で見つけた風景

The sunset was around 0 am, the sunrise was around 3 am. I didn’t need to concern about a dark night, I walked about 20km a day until 8 pm. The weather was very changeable.
この島を訪れたのは夏至近くだったので、日の入り０時、日の出３時頃で夜も明るい。島の大きさは歩いてまわれるほどなので、８時頃出発してお散歩。20kmくらい歩いて、20時頃戻った。天気はとても変わりやすく、曇りのち雨のち晴れのち曇りのち、、、。

1m先は何十mの断崖。目の前を海鳥がたくさん飛んでいる。

空港。東の海岸沿いを北から南に歩いていたら、滑走路に行く手を阻まれた。

What were they? They were heads of fish. What for?
何だろう、、、と近づくと、魚の頭。何に使うのだろう？

Heimaey

I arrived at the domestic airport. I found that my flight was 30 minutes later than the time on my flight ticket. I asked about the flight from Vestmannaeyjar to Reykjavík 2 days later. The time had changed one and half hours earlier than the time on my flight ticket. The boarding pass was a thin paper looked like a receipt. After an airplane to Akureyri left the airport, there were only about 20 people in the airport. Just before the time of departure, there were still about 20 people. When I saw our airplane, I understood. The plane was small.

レイキャヴィーク空港に着くと、フライトの時間は30分遅くなっていた。インターネットで帰りのフライトの時間が１時間半早くなっていたので確認すると、やはり早まっていた。確認してよかった。搭乗券はレシートのような、薄い紙。アークレイリ行きの飛行機が出たあと、空港は、がらんとした。出発時間が近づいても、あまり人は増えない。出発時間となり、飛行機を見て納得。小さい。





20 passengers. Everyone had a window, a comfortable seat.
After the departure, I could see “vast lava desert” from the window. Reykjavík looked like an oasis in the desert.
パイロットが乗客を出迎え、最後に乗り込み操縦席へ。乗客20人。全席窓付き、ふかふか座席。離陸後、窓から見える景色は溶岩だらけ。巨大な溶岩砂漠（何かのパンフレットに“vast lava desert” と書いてあった。まさしく、その通り。）になんとか緑を植えたところに家が少し、という感じ。レイキャヴィークも砂漠の中のオアシスという感じ。

I felt that how wonderful I spent in this beautiful place for three days!
I started to walk to the town.
ヴェストマンナエイヤル空港を出たところ。こんな素敵なところに３日間も滞在できるなんて！と繰り返し思いながら、ヘイマエイの町に向かう。


I enjoyed the beautiful view. I took photos.
写真を撮りながら、景色に感激しながら歩く。


The town was soon.
町が見えてきた。


YH. They took off their shoes at the entrance in Iceland. There was a kitchen. All of places in YH were neat and tidy.
ユースホステル。日本ほどはっきりした“玄関”はないけど、アイスランドでも靴は玄関で脱ぐ。小さなキッチンあり。電気コンロは４つだけなので、順番に使えば快適に過ごせる。冷蔵庫もある。トイレとシャワーは２つずつ。どこもきれいにされているので、快適。


This was a shared room I spent 2 nights. There were six beds, one sink, two chairs and two small tables. I slept in my sleeping bag on the bed. I didn’t meet anyone in this room for 2 nights.
屋根の所にある小窓のお部屋。２階の部屋の二重ロックの鍵（去年も何度か経験した）のドアを開けると、目の前に急な階段があり、それを登るとこの屋根裏部屋。ベッドは６つ。右のベッドは座ると頭が天井にあたる。この部屋の中に洗面台あり、小さなテーブルと椅子もあり。このベッドの上で寝袋を使用する。結局、２晩とも同室者なしだった。

Iceland in 2006 アイスランド再び

I arrived at the Keflavík international airport via London around 11 pm on June 24th. I exchanged Japanese yen into Icelandic krónur(Ikr) at the airport. 1 krónur = about 1.6 yen. I got in flybus in front of the airport, I paid 1100 Ikr. The bus ran on the lava field for 30 – 40 minutes, headed to Reykjavík. I could see the sunset from the bus. I had a feeling that this trip would be wonderful. I changed buses at BSÍ Bus Terminal, headed to a hotel I had a booking. I was told “overbooking” “We prepared a room in a guesthouse for you.” He took me to Three sisters guesthouse. The room had a kitchen and 2 beds. I relaxed on the comfortable bed.

6月24日午後11時過ぎ、ロンドン経由でケプラヴィーク国際空港に到着した。荷物を受け取る前に空港内で両替。アイスランドの通貨クローナは国内でしか両替できないのです。1クローナは約1.6円。アイスランドは物価がとても高く、円に換算するとめまいがするので、旅行中考えないようにした。空港前では、レイキャヴィーク市内へのシャトルバスflybusが待っていた。バスに乗りこみ1100クローナを支払い、宿泊先のホテルの名前を言った。バスは溶岩台地を30-40分走った。見えるものは、溶岩と海。日の入りが０時頃だったので、海に日が沈んでいくのを見ることができた。夕日の歓迎とは、なんだかいい旅になりそうな予感。バスターミナルBSÍでバスを乗り換えて、ホテルに着く。インターネットで予約をしていたが、オーバーブッキングと言われ、ホテルのオーナーが経営しているゲストハウスに部屋を準備しているので案内します、と約20m先のThree sisters guesthouseへ。キッチン付き、ベッド２つの素敵なお部屋。今回の旅行で唯一のリッチな夜。

The following day, I had a breakfast in the hotel.
The flight to Vestmannaeyjar was 11:30 am. I had enough time to walk around. I decided to walk to the domestic airport.
There were a lot of birds around Tjörnin lake.
次の朝、ホテルで朝食。ヴェストマンナエイヤル行きのフライトまで時間があったので、お散歩しながら国内線のレイキャヴィーク空港へ行くことにした。人通りの少ない日曜日の朝、チョルトニン湖は鳥がたくさん。

空港近くにも花がたくさん咲いていた。

Heimaey -Puffins-

I just came back from Iceland. It was the second time to visit Iceland. I had made this plan for looking puffins close. The first time I saw puffins was more than 10 years ago in Alaska. I was fascinated by their adorable appearance. Last year, I happened to see a photo of puffins’ colony on a magazine in Iceland. I asked our Icelandic guide “Do you know where it is?”. She said “Yes, I do. This place is in the northeast of Iceland. You can see puffins on the Westman Islands. It’s easier to visit.”. Since then, I bought a guide book “lonely planet”, I looked up on the internet, I had planed this Iceland trip.
I stayed on Heimaey Island for three days. This island is the only island people live in Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands).

２度目のアイスランドの旅から戻ってきました。一番の目的はパフィンを近くで見ること。パフィンとの出会いは10年以上前のアラスカ旅行。氷河を見に行くクルージングで、無数のパフィンが住む小さな島の近くを通り、そのかわいい姿に心を奪われた。昨年のアイスランドツアーの時、たまたま手に取った雑誌にパフィンのコロニーの写真があった。ツアーに同行していたアイスランド人のガイドに、この写真の場所を知っているか聞くと、そこはアイスランドの北東の町。パフィンを見たければ、ウェストマン島にもいますよ。と、教えてもらった。アイスランドツアーから戻ってからは、パフィンに会いに行くために、情報収集。“地球の歩き方”にアイスランドがないので、”lonely planet”を買い、インターネットで検索。休暇ももらえることになって、夢が実現した。
ヴェストマンナエイヤル（通称ウェストマン諸島）のうち、唯一人が住んでいる島、ヘイマエイに３日滞在した。


Heimaey is a small island (about 4km from east to west, about 6km from north to south). I went to the west coast ,Ofanleitishamar, to see puffins every day. I could see lots of puffins on the bad weather days, but I saw few puffins on the sunny day.
ヘイマエイは東西約４km、南北約６kmという小さな島。
私が毎日通ったのは、島の西側、Ofanleitishamarという断崖が続く海岸。天気によってパフィンの数は違い、風が少ない晴れた日には、ほとんどいなかった。



Puffins are about 20cm. They live in Iceland from April to August to breed.
体長、約20cm.　春から夏にかけて、子育てのためにアイスランドにやってくる。





I could see puffins’ adorable appearance. Puffins were flying in front of me.
目の前でかわいい仕草をしてる。
空をパフィンが飛び交う。
しあわせな時間がゆったり流れる。



Ofanleitishamar. There was a path along the cliff. I walked carefully. Because there were holes on the ground, the soil and grasses overhung the rock at some places.
パフィンの住む断崖。崖沿いにお散歩。時々、大きな穴があいていたり、崖の端が岩より土や草の方が出っ張ってることがあるので、足元に十分注意。
