Cotwold コッツウォルズの村々

The last destination was Cotwold, beautiful villages. I visited three villages.

８年前のイギリスの旅。最後に訪れたのは、湖水地方に次いで印象に残った、コッツウォルズの村々。バースからコッツウォルズを巡るツアーに参加したかったのですが、週に数回しかなくて断念。
そこで、ストラトフォード・アポン・エイヴォンからコッツウォルズの村々を通りバースへ向かうバスに乗り、途中下車して３つの村をお散歩しました。






I stayed at a YH in one of the villages, Stow-on-the-Wold. I found an old photo at the YH. It was taken about 100 years ago, but the scenery around the YH didn't change.

Stow-on-the-Woldという村にYHがあり、一泊しました。屋根に３つ窓がある建物がYHです。フロントには約100年前の写真がありましたが、今とほとんど変わっていませんでした。







I really liked villages in Cotwold. If I had had enough time, I could've enjoyed walking in rural landscape more.

素敵なイギリスの田舎でした。もっとゆっくりして田園風景の中もお散歩したかったのですが、時間がなくなってしまいました。

Stratford-upon-Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon. Many tourists visit William Shakespeare's birthplace.
ストラトフォード・アポン・エイヴォンにはシェイクスピアの生家があり、各国の観光客が訪れていました。近くの劇場では、シェイクスピアの演劇も行われていました


Shakespeare's wife lived in this thatched roof house until she got married.
シェイクスピアの妻の生家は、茅葺きの家でかわいい。


There were such pretty houses.
この辺りには、かわいい木枠の建物が多い。



I visited Warwick Castle.
バスで近くのウォーリック城へ行ってみました。


I could watch an event of knights.
城内では、騎士のイベントも行われていました。

Bath バース

I moved to Bath. There was a steep slope for Bath YH, I got tired. But I could see these houses and churches in Bath.

ヨークから直行のバスでバースへ移動したかったのですが、満席のためロンドン経由で向かいました。バースYHは急坂の上。でも、途中からバースの街並みが見渡せました。


It looked like a building on a bridge.
建物のような橋。パルティニィ橋。


The Roman Baths.
約2000年前、ローマ人の造った公衆浴場が残っていました。バース（Bath）という地名の由来です。
この旅は初めてのヨーロッパでしたので、2000年前の技術力の高さと、今でも残っているということに、とても驚きました。

York ヨーク

I left the Lake District after staying there for ten days, headed to York by bus. The bus ran thought pretty villages. If I had had more time, I could've stayed at these villages.
York was surrounded by a castle wall.

湖水地方からバスでいくつかの街を巡りながら、ヨークへ移動しました。
ヨークは城壁に囲まれた街。歴史ある建物がたくさんありました。


There were some Bars.
バーと呼ばれる、街への出入口が数カ所ありました。中世の時代にタイムスリップしたようです。



Clifford's Tower, it was a part of York Castle.
ヨーク城の一部で、唯一現存するクリフォーズ・タワー。


Tourists enjoy the scenery from boats.
クルージングも楽しめるようです。

Watendlath 湖水地方の小さな村

Watendlath, a small village I visited on the last day of my stay in the Lake District. I walked over a hill and along a stream, then I reached there.

Watendlath、湖水地方で訪れた最後の場所。道を間違えそうになりながら丘を越え、小川沿いをてくてくお散歩。
建物が見えると、そこがWatendlathでした。


Two horses welcomed me.
馬たちも出迎えてくれました。


There was a stone bridge.
石橋。いつ造られたのかしら。


I looked back the stone bridge. It was so beautiful.
石橋を渡って、振り返りました。


I saw many birds and animals. The place seemed like a paradise for them.
生き物たちが、たくさん住んでいました。



Watendlath Tarn. This place might be the quietest village in the Lake District. It was a really beautiful village.

Watendlath湖。 ひっそり、静かで神秘的。湖水地方の中でも、いちばん静かな村かもしれません。とても美しい場所でした。

Keswick ケズウィック

Keswick was the busiest place in northern Lake District. I moved here from quiet Buttermere, so I felt like Keswick was a big city.
ケズウィック。湖水地方北部で一番にぎわっていた街。
とても静かなバタミアに２泊した後だったので、お店と人の多さに圧倒されました。


Double-decker buses were common in England.
２階建てバスは、普通にありました。


I walked to Castlerigg Stone Circle from Keswick. There were many Stone Circles in England.
ケズウィックからてくてくお散歩。カッスルリッジ・ストーン・サークル。
イギリスには、有名なストーンヘンジだけでなく、たくさんストーン・サークルがあるそうです。


This is one of maps I bought in Lake District. It shows that people treat their dogs as a member of their family and it is common to hike with dogs.
湖水地方で買った絵地図のひとつ。
先日、犬たちは家族の一員として、飼い主たちと一緒にウォーキングを楽しんでいたと書きましたが、ちょうどこのような感じでした。

Buttermere バタミア

I headed to Buttermere by bus. The bus ran along a lake, over Honister Pass. I enjoyed the scenery from the bus window.
There was a church in Buttermere.
グラスミアからバスで、ホニスター峠を越えてバタミアへ。車窓も楽しい。
曇りや小雨の毎日。慣れてしまいました。
バタミアの歴史ある教会。


Buttermere was a small village, very quiet.
バタミアはとても小さな村。食料品はパブの片隅で売られていましたが、種類が少ない。グラスミアで食料を買っていて良かったと思いました。
YHの受付では、卵や牛乳など自炊に必要なものが買えましたが、バタミアYHで牛乳を頼むと量り売りで、コップに入れてくれました。びっくりしましたが、エコですね。


I had planed to walk around Buttermere Lake. When I went out the YH, I met two Austrian women who shared a room with me. They said " We are climbing up a hill with an English man today. Do you want to join us?" I changed my plan, joined them.
バタミア湖を一周お散歩しようとバタミアYHを出たところで、同室者のオーストリア人女性２人に出会いました。友人のイギリス人男性と３人でハイキングするのだけど、一緒に行かないかと誘われて、一緒に歩くことにしました。


There was Bleaberry Turn on our way to the top of the hill.
最初はひたすら登り。丘の上の湖、きれいでした。


We had a rest on the top of the hill. It was windy, but the panorama view was wonderful.
頂上に到着。素晴らしい風景でした。風が強くて、ひんやり。しばらく休憩。


We kept on walking until 18:20. We enjoyed talking at the night.
後は下りや平坦な場所が多く、道を間違えそうになりながら、てくてくお散歩。夕方までよく歩きました。24kmくらいあったそうです。
その夜、部屋で話を楽しみました。次の朝、目が覚めると２人はもう出発した後でした。良い思い出です。

Walking ウォーキング

I met many people during the walking. An elderly couple were walking with their canes, said " We used to walk a lot. But we have a problem on our knees, so we often have to take a rest during walking." A couple with their two children from London said "You did watch The changing of the guard at Buckingham palace! Our children haven't seen it, we live in London though." Many people were walking with their dogs.
I bought walking maps. I thought they were unique. There was a simple drawing map, and the direction was written on the opposite side of the map. So I had to read it.

イギリスの人たちは、ウォーキングが好きなようで、子どもから年配の人たちまで楽しんでいました。出会った老夫婦は、「膝が悪くなったから、昔のようには歩けないよ」と言いながらも、杖を使って休みながら歩いていました。
ロンドン付近の都会から、夏休みを利用して滞在しているたちが多かったように思います。２人の子ども連れの夫婦は「衛兵交代式を見たの？この子たちは、まだ見たことないのよ」
飼い犬と一緒に歩く人たちも多かった。そういえば、バスの中でも犬を見かけました。おとなしく床に座っていて、家族の一員でした。
ウォーキングには、湖水地方全体の地図と、地区ごとの絵地図５枚一組のものを買いました。その絵地図がユニーク。絵地図はとても簡単ですが、裏には”教会の角を右に曲がって、約150ヤード進むとホテルがあって、、、”と文章で歩き方が書いてありました。書いてあるように、ホテルや橋、柵を見つけるたびに、なんだか楽しくなりました。

On the following morning, I headed to another hill.
次の日、朝早く出発して、また別の丘の上にある湖を見に行きました。



I reached Easedale Tarn. I heard something.
登って、登って、湖に着きました。静かなこの景色を独り占め。と、何か声が聞こえてきました。


There were sheep around the turn. And I heard a shepherd's voice, but I couldn't recognise him. The scenery had a dreamy atmosphere.
羊たちでした。そして、羊飼いの声も聞こてきました。とても幻想的な世界でした。


I climbed up a little higher, there was a smaller turn.
もう少し登ると、ひっそりと湖がありました。


I spent there for a while, then I walked back to Grasmere. I met many English people who stayed around there on their summer holiday.
しばらくそこで過ごした後、来た道を戻りました。人々がどんどん登ってきます。子どもも年配の人たちも、マイペースで歩いていました。
